Botanicals

by Carol Hoffnagle

This series was done on the computer using the program, Photoshop. The originals were 19th century German botanical drawings reproduced as lithographs. When I found them they were stained, folded and generally in poor condition. I scanned them into my computer and proceeded to clean them up and color them.

The difference between what I did and a hand-colored lithograph is that with the lithograph it is usually watercolor painted over the black lines. In Photoshop I was able to change the color of the lines themselves. This way I could make the blue flowers at the top-left really glow blue instead of being blue painted over black.
