Asquith is equally if not more culpable. In a Gallipoli Memorial Lecture in 1990 the historian Robert O’Neill noted, ‘Asquith continued to permit Churchill and Kitchener to enmire themselves, their nation, the Empire and their allies in a swamp which was to claim the lives of 150,000 men, inflict colossal hardship upon a further 850,000 … inflict misery on thousands of families of the men who had died and blight the lives of all those who had to tend to the physically and psychologically maimed survivors over the next generation.
